Merafong By-Election: Pregnant DA activist in hospital after alleged assault by ANC man

The DA demands immediate action by the police against a suspected ANC member who allegedly assaulted a DA activist during yesterday’s by-election in Merafong. Puleng Likotsi, a young pregnant DA activist who volunteered to help during the day was dancing with a group of DA supporters when she was allegedly kicked by a drunk man who is believed to be an ANC member.

The DA instantly intervened to prevent further violence between large groups of activists, immediately communicated with the police on site and ensured that an ambulance was called.  The man’s identity is known and the DA has organised legal assistance to ensure appropriate charges are laid. Currently Puleng is in hospital busy recovering.

The DA demands that the police apply themselves urgently to this matter to ensure that justice is done.

We expect the ANC to discipline its members and ensure this does not happen again, especially in an environment where they are rapidly losing support.

Comments by ANC activists on-site suggest that the ANC intends doing nothing and further attempts at intimidation later in the evening is being investigated. The ANC was clearly uncomfortable with large groups of locals assisting at DA tables and visibly showing their support.

This will be a test of whether the ANC takes democracy seriously and can remain committed to free and fair elections as their support-base gradually crumbles.
