New MEC must wield heavy hand to fix Gauteng Liquor Board mess

The chaotic state of the Gauteng Liquor Board is under the microscope again following this year’s Auditor-General report on the mess that is its finances and operations. According to a report this morning the financial woes of this trading entity of the Gauteng Economic Development Department continues, and licences are issued under questionable circumstances.

New Economic Development MEC Eric Xayiya must act to ensure that the affairs of the Liquor Board is rectified during his tenure as MEC, this includes finalising the disciplinary investigation into the man blamed for the fiasco by the Auditor-General, none other than suspended Head of Department Khulu Radebe.

The DA also reiterates its call for placing the Gauteng Liquor Board under administration as the chaotic state of the entity requires drastic and direct intervention.

The DA does not believe that probe after probe will address the problems that continue to place the now dysfunctional liquor licensing body. The recurring issues are not addressed and because of the chaos the Liquor Board is not collecting the revenue it is meant to.

I will write to the Economic Development MEC asking he outline his strategy to reverse the now near-four year long decline and chaos.
