The DA in the NW welcomes the Electoral Court decision in Bloemfontein this afternoon.
The Court ordered that the 6 Potchefstroom Independent candidate’s applications to have the by-elections in the wards where they were disqualified by the IEC postponed be granted.
In addition the Court ordered that the IEC investigate events at the Potchefstroom IEC office which led to the disqualification of the Independent candidates.
The image and brand of the IEC as an independent and fair election agent suffered serious damage during the past weeks in the run-up to the By-elections.
It is important that the credibility of the IEC be restored – this would demand a transparent and thorough investigation by the IEC.
Today’s incidents where the IEC conducted the special vote’s process without voting booths in full view of ANC members who then rewarded every ANC voter with a fruit parcel left a perception that irregularities within the IEC may have become systemic.
The DA will closely observe the conduct of IEC officials during the remaining by-elections.
