Chicken City: Mahikeng spends R132 585 on Nandos in 35 days

Chris Hattingh

DA Leader in North West

Between 15 March and 18 April this year, the Municipality of Mahikeng spent R132 585 of council money on Nandos.

This information surfaced during a discussion at Mahikeng’s Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC). I have flagged it with the Auditor-General (AG), who conceded that it was a serious concern.

The City is not able to provide any documentation for this expenditure, nor is it able to provide a reason for purchasing such large quantities of Nandos in such a short period of time. Since there is no documentation of this expenditure, the AG is unfortunately also not able to determine who is responsible for these purchases.

This is without doubt the most excessive and pointless instance of fruitless and wasteful expenditure in North West Province’s history.

Spending R132 585 on Nandos in 35 days means that:

* The council spent R3789 on Nandos, on average, per day during that period.

* The council bought up to 4434 chicken burgers, 947 family pack meals or 4928 quarter chickens.

This is a simply unacceptable waste of council money. The money should rather be spent on delivering services like water, electricity, housing and roads to make life better for the people of Mahikeng.

Everyone loves Nandos. But politicians and council employees earn salaries and can buy it for themselves. It is not acceptable to use money meant for service delivery to buy Nandos.

If the AG is not able to get to the bottom of this, the DA will submit a request to the Public Protector to investigate.
