DA calls on IPID to investigate Mpumalanga Hawks boss

Anthony Benadie MPL

Provincial Leader – Mpumalanga

The DA will lodge an official complaint with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate against provincial Hawks boss Maj Gen Simon Mapyane, calling for an independent investigation into his alleged fraudulent actions.

This follows after repeated calls on national police commissioner General Ria Phiyega to suspend Maj Gen Mapyane have fallen on deaf ears, despite additional fraud charges being added to the existing charges, when yet another falsified travel claim was discovered. It has also emerged that an internal SAPS investigation into his conduct has been completed, but to date no action has been taken against him.

In previous correspondence with the DA, Gen Phiyega kept her responses as vague as possible, saying that certain “internal prescripts” had to be followed before any action could be taken.

However, the fact is that while Maj Gen Mapyane has not been found guilty of any crime, the emergence of additional evidence shows that he may very well be a serial offender, and that more false travel claims may emerge before his appearance on 27 November.

The DA therefore believes that investigators must continue their search for more evidence, but that Maj Gen Mapyane’s continued presence at work may hamper the investigation and possibly compromise the process and witnesses.

It is critical that all members of the police, especially those in command, lead by example in the fight against crime. Gen Phyiega’s failure to act against the top brass, sends a disturbing message over government’s commitment to protecting South Africa’s people against criminals and criminal behaviour.
