DA Caucus leader and councillors arrested for public violence

Desiree van der Walt

DA Limpopo Legislature Caucus Leader

Myself together with Mogalakwena Councillors Marcelle Maritz and Beyers Smit, were yesterday arrested and charged with public violence while we were attending to the chaotic situation which erupted in Mogalakwena Municipality.

This is after the Mayor had called in people from the MK to prevent the Municipal Manager from entering the offices.

The Council took the decision that the suspended MM must report for duty as from 14 October 2013.

There was a heavy presence of the police from both Mokopane and Mawelereng stations.  This is in addition to the security officers who are employed by the municipality.

DA Councillor Marcelle Maritz was assaulted by a Colonel and when we went there to lay a charge, we were also arrested.

I regard this as a police tactic to intimidate us.

Clearly the Mayor has vested interest in preventing the MM from returning to work. This will afford him the opportunity to conceal all the irregularities which were happening under the MM’s watch.

The DA will not be cowed into submission by a Mayor who uses the police to intimidate us. We will get to the bottom of this to ensure that all officials of the municipality who are implicated in any wrong doing face the law.
