The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal welcomes the provincial Education department’s changed stance on Diwali school closures.
This after the DA wrote to Education MEC, Peggy Nkonyeni, earlier this month following claims by Chatsworth school principals that they had been denied permission to close on Monday 4 November, due to Diwali, while Phoenix schools had meanwhile been given consent.
The DA welcomes the department’s swift response to this matter and the assurance that any school which makes a formal application to close as a result of this important Hindu festival will be accommodated.
The DA wishes members of the Hindu community a peaceful and blessed Festival of Lights. To those who will be celebrating with fireworks, we appeal to you to exercise caution as far as you, your family and your pets are concerned – mishaps happen as result of carelessness, negligence and ignorance, all of which can be avoided.
