DA welcomes MEC’s stance on poor performing private schools

The DA welcomes the announcement by education MEC Reginah Mhaule that independent schools that produce a Matric pass rate less than 50% for three consecutive years would be shut down.

We believe that the MEC’s stance against non-performing private schools is a step in the right direction, as many scholars and parents are often taken for a ride by non-accredited independent schools.

There are 110 private schools in the province with most of these costing substantially more than public schools. However in 2012, five of these schools obtained less than 50% matric pass rates, raising questions on the quality of education on offer.

Furthermore, matriculants from some private schools have in the past been left wanting after being notified that their senior certificate qualifications were invalid, as their schools were not accredited with recognised bodies.

The DA believes that the MEC’s decision will ensure that parents and learners of independent schools get their money’s worth, and that a high standard of education across the board is maintained.
