Gauteng to shut 77 illegal gambling joints

Fred Nel MPL

Spokesperson on Local Government

Gauteng police have identified 77 unlicensed or illegal gambling establishments in the province and are in the process of clamping down on them. The maximum fine of up to R10 million or 10 years impisonment could be imposed on a gambling establishment operating illegally or without a proper license.

Gauteng is quite possibly the Gambling Capital of South Africa, with 7 casinos and 396 other establishments licenced to house and operate gambling machines in the province according to the reply to my question in the Legislature.

The DA will submit further questions to determine the exact time frames for shutting down the 77 unlicensed or illegal gambling establishments in Gauteng.

Given the prevalence of gambling establishments in Gauteng it is absolutely pivotal to ensure that their operations, facilities and services are all above board.
