Mmemezi’s Balfour merger plan canned

The plan to include Balfour into Gauteng proposed by former controversial Local Government MEC Humphrey Mmemezi has been abandoned.

This is revealed in the Department of Local Government and Housing’s latest annual report.

The DA welcomes this development because the incorporation would have cost the people of Gauteng billions of Rand.

In order for Gauteng to flourish as a province it needs to operate in an environment of certainty with regards to its boundaries and liabilities for the future. The province already attracts the largest number pf migrants of all South Africa’s provinces. The addition of Balfour would have had serious implications for the province and its development.

The DA hopes that future proposed boundary changes will be considered carefully before wasting valuable resources in pursuing them as was the case with Balfour.
