No food for over 8 000 learners in Limpopo

In Vhembe district alone, more than 8000 learners attend lessons with empty stomachs every day. The DA has learned that this is due to the provincial Education Department’s failure to supply food through its School Nutrition Programme.

The Limpopo Education MEC, Ms Dikeledi Magadzi, must urgently intervene.

Since the re-opening of the schools this month, primary schools such as Madimpo , Matshema , Masea  and Mapakoni in Niani Circuit around Tshipise are still waiting for the food to be delivered.

The circuit has more than 40 schools and more than 20 of them have been affected. Learners are now skipping their classes due to hunger. It is having a negative impact on education in the region.

Despite the fact that the department has allocated more than R900 Million for the programme in 2013/2014 financial year, the programme has fallen behind on its delivery targets.

MEC Magadzi must intervene to get the food delivered to the schools as soon as possible. I will be in contact with the MEC as soon as possible to alert her to the situation.

The DA will also be monitoring other schools across the province to establish whether the food is being delivered accordingly.
