Public Protector must urgently probe Vulindlela housing tenders

George Mari, MPP

DA KZN Spokesperson on Human Settlements

The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal has rewritten to Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, after a letter written almost three years ago requesting an urgent investigation into the Vulindlela housing development tender process, remains unanswered.

The DA’s original letter was sent to the Durban office for the Public Protector thirty months ago.  I was subsequently called in for two separate interviews to clarify certain matters.

To date there has been no further correspondence from the Public Protector’s office.

The DA is extremely concerned by the delay in launching this investigation.

The Vulindlela housing project, based outside Pietermaritzburg, is in serious trouble.  It is facing major challenges including contractors not being paid, unfinished houses while the project is also way behind schedule.

KwaZulu-Natal has a massive housing backlog and this project needs to be completed.

The DA has consistently raised concern over this issue within the provincial legislature over the past few years.

We urge the Public Protector to prioritise this matter and to respond to today’s letter without delay.
