Roodepan School Stabbing: not enough being done to prevent school violence

Dr Allen Grootboom

DA Spokesperson on Education in the Northern Cape

The DA condemns violence in schools. There is a growing culture of violence in schools across the province, which seemingly mirrors national trends.

The latest incident saw a stabbing at Pescodia High School in Roodepan yesterday, where one pupil sustained a stab wound on his neck.

The stabbing occurred during a fight which broke out amongst learners. Some of the learners wielded dangerous weapons such as knives and a screwdriver.

Although the police arrived on the scene in an unmarked vehicle, no indication was given as to whether any arrests were made.

The DA is concerned that the provincial education department does not have active plans to address such incidents of violence. What happened to the School Safety Plans touted by the department?

Teachers and learners are exposed to a climate of fear and trauma. Schools should be a safe space for all.

The DA will be writing to the Education MEC, Griezelda Cjikella, to ascertain whether her department is aware of this stabbing incident, and what action will be taken by her department to protect learners and educators at this school and others.
