Unattended sewage spill a health risk to pre-school children

The DA calls on the Mbombela local municipality to immediately attend to two sewage spills at the White River Pre-primary school, which poses a major health risk to 150 children from two to six years of age.

One spill emanates from a manhole located on the outside of the wall behind the toddler class and play area, while the other is located across the main entrance of the school. The school is constantly enveloped in a pall of noxious smell, forcing teachers to shut windows and doors of their classrooms in an effort to escape the stench.

The municipality has on several occasions sent teams to attend to the leaks, but to no avail, and it appears to have given up completely. The local DA councillor has been trying for weeks now to get the municipality back to the site, but to no avail.

The DA will today write to cooperative governance MEC SPD Skhosana, his health counterpart Candith Mashego-Dlamini as well as municipal manager Xolani Mzobe, demanding a permanent solution to these spills within seven days, failing which we will report the matter to the Human Rights Commission for investigation.
