DA encourages Free State Youth to register to vote

Annelie Lotriet MP

DA Free State Provincial Chairperson

IEC registration results show that our young people in the Free State have yet to take ownership of their right to vote as indicated in the IEC registration trends as of 26 October 2016. Only 9 779 eligible voters in the age group 18 to 19 years old are currently registered out of a pool of 102 887 people. In the 20 to 29 years age group, only 273 303 people are registered out of a pool of 494 162.

It is a worrying trend that the youth are failing to register to vote when the poor quality education, expensive tertiary education and unemployment are issues that directly affect them. Youth unemployment in the Free State increased significantly from 36,6% in 2003 to a shocking high of 46,7% in 2013.

We encourage all Free State Youth to register over this weekend’s, 09 and 10 November 2013, IEC registration drive at their nearest voting station. Voting stations will be open for registration from 8am to 5pm on both days.

Voters can confirm whether they are registered and where, by sending an sms to 32810 with their ID numbers.

The only way possible to successfully address issues facing our young people is to take ownership of their futures through democratic participation at the ballot box.
