DA KZN Legislature: DA slam ANC over Msunduzi electricity hike

The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal has slammed Msunduzi ANC council members for failing to vote against a massive municipal electricity tariff hike set to create a huge burden to the city’s poorest residents.

During a sitting of the provincial Legislature today, the DA took ANC members to task, tabling a motion expressing concern over the extraordinary increase and the party’s failure to block the hike.

Not only is the increase exorbitant, it is inexplicable.

The DA does not buy the Mayor’s claim that it has been imposed in a bid to balance the budget and we question the ANC’s real motives around this move.

The increase is also likely to impede the recovery of the municipality as a whole with its impact on small businesses and residents.  Some 15 years ago electricity prices went up dramatically in Msunduzi.  The result was that many small businesses closed down or left for other areas which offered a more attractive business environment.

The ANC’s myopic view and the resolution to impose such a hike reveals an alarming lack of vision.

This decision – along with the ongoing protection of ‘fat cat’ buddies at the expense of millions of ordinary people, which it pretends to champion – has exposed the ANC precisely for what it is.
