DA to make a PAIA application on Limpopo’s medical waste

Tenders relating to Limpopo’s medical waste continue to be a driven by irregular political manipulation. This is according to a source close to the department’s tender process.

Tender HEDP076/13 for collection/removal/transportation/treatment of medical waste in Limpopo is allegedly now due to be awarded questionably.

This tender was advertised in June 2013 and closed on 20 July 2013.  The storage facilities of all bidders were supposed to be visited by departmental officials to inspect their compliance with environmental regulations.  However, only the warehouse belonging to one bidder – Buhle Medical Waste – was allegedly visited.

If this allegation is true, it would place Buhle Medical Waste at an unfair advantage over other bidders.

To make matters worse, Buhle Medical Waste was allegedly slammed in an internal audit report (closure report) conducted in July 2013.  This report is now allegedly hidden as highly confidential.

I will be submitting a PAIA application to the department to get hold of this report. We need to determine whether this tender was allocated fairly, and indeed whether Buhle medical waste is doing a good job. If these allegations are true, I will push for serious disciplinary steps against the government officials involved in this process.

We will also be submitting written questions to Health MEC Ms. Letsatsi-Duba, to establish whether the warehouses of all other bidders were in fact visited or not.
