The KwaZulu-Natal mid-year reviews, which began yesterday in the provincial legislature, will see the Democratic Alliance pose several important questions to Treasury ahead of the adjustment budgets.
Foremost will be questions relating to whether the provincial budget needs an adjustment and, if so, whether this is the result of poor planning by Treasury officials. We will also seek answers around possible cost overruns within departments and the reasons for them. Questions will also be asked around cost savings and how they have come about.
Both province’s Education and Health departments are set to come under the spotlight during the reviews. These are crucial, people-centred departments, which are under enormous pressure in terms of budgets, and the DA will be looking to ensure that sufficient funding is allocated to them.
The reviews are an important oversight opportunity for opposition parties to hold Treasury to account and ensure that taxpayers’ money is spent where it should be. The DA welcomes this opportunity to engage with Treasury and find the best possible way to spend the province’s budget.
