Education Department dodged accountability

Dr. Allen Grootboom, MPL

DA Spokesperson on Education in the Northern Cape

The Northern Cape Education MEC, Griezelda Cjiekella, dodged appearing before the Provincial Legislature to present her department’s poor audit outcomes.

In a combined meeting of the portfolio committee and SCOPA, the Education Department sent departmental officials led by their HOD Tshepo Pharasi.

The department’s audit outcomes were poor, and the Auditor-General gave the department a qualified audit for the 2012/13 financial year.

The reason for the qualified audit was that the physical existence of equipment such as computers, office furniture, and other machinery at a combined value of R62-million, could not be confirmed.

The A-G paints a damning picture of the departments leadership and slams the lack of action taken against consistent poor delivery by managers.

However to our astonishment, the HOD himself opted to avoid answering serious questions posed to him during the meeting, and was shielded by the Chairperson, Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba, and other ANC MPL’s.

Helping failing departments dodge accountability does not help anyone make things better in the Northern Cape.

The Education Department’s arrogance and attempts to avoid accountability are an insult to the people and the learners of the Northern Cape.

The DA will be submitting in writing all questions fudged and avoided by the provincial education department during the meeting.
