Extend Emalahleni Administrator’s Term

Anthony Benadie MPL

Provincial Leader – Mpumalanga

The DA calls on Premier DD Mabuza and the Mpumalanga Provincial Government to immediately pronounce themselves on, and extend the term of the Emalahleni administrator Theo Van Vuuren.

Mr Theo van Vuuren was appointed as Emalahleni administrator on 18 April this year following the municipality’s continued failure to deliver services and to efficiently manage its finances.

Mr van Vuuren’s contract came to an end yesterday and at a council meeting last night, no mention was made of an extension of his term, this despite rumour and media reports stating that the administration would continue until December.

The DA firmly believes that Mr van Vuuren’s term must be extended for at least another six months to allow him to continue the work he was started and to complete the implementation of Emalahleni’s turn-around strategy.

The DA does not believe that the ANC has effectively dealt with its internal turmoil in Emalahleni, with continued cases of factionalism, sabotage and undermining the administration and the ANC is therefore not in a position to resume its governance responsibilities in the municipality.

The Emalahleni Municipality still has a long road to recovery and handing the municipal administration back to the local ANC leadership would be a mistake. The Premier and Provincial Government must set aside all uncertainty and extend the administrator’s terms without delay.
