Khutsong shows urgent need to bring back specialist anti-gang units

The DA in Gauteng condemns the vigilante justice of the community of Khutsong and calls for the urgent reinstatement of specialised anti-gang units in the police.

Six people have been murdered by 400 local men taking the law into their own hands due to the failure of local law enforcement agencies to effectively address gangsterism and related problems in the area.

While vigilante justice is never acceptable, the lack of capacity in the police and the inability to address gangsterism in a targeted and specialised manner has fuelled the frustrations of Khutsong locals. The DA trusts that those guilty of the murder of these six people will be brought to book.

It has been noted that gang-related crime and violence has been on the increase in Gauteng since the controversial disbanding of specialised police units by former National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi in 2006.

These units need to be reinstated in areas like Khutsong to urgently address the situation.

Instead of getting involved in ugly spats, Gauteng Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko should add her voice to the growing calls for the reinstatement of these specialised police units to free the people of Khutsong from the gang’s reign of terror.
