DA MPL in the Free State Provincial Legislature
Replies from the Premier of the Free State, Mr Ace Magashule, to questions posed in the legislature are contemptuous of the institution and display a lack of respect for members of the provincial legislature.
The Legislature has a constitutional duty to hold the executive to account, yet the Premier refuses to be held accountable. He simply dodges answers and refuses to respond sincerely. This displays a total disregard for the constitution, the authority of the legislature, and the voters of the province whose representatives are members of this legislature.
His cryptic replies (attached) to number of questions (attached) give no substance and are not good enough. The DA allowed him more time last week to supply late replies, on condition that his responses are thorough. His office requested this citing his illness as a reason. Whatever illness he has is no reason for his lack of respect and disregard for his constitutional responsibilities to the legislature.
These responses show how the premier has no interest in accounting to the legislature; and in fact has no intention of governing transparently.
Magashule thinks that he is a law unto himself and that he is accountable to no-one. This comes from having too much power and running his provincial government like a warlord instead of a democratically elected and accountable premier.
The DA does not regard these response as appropriate, and will place this issue on the agenda of the next meeting of the Rules and Orders Committee of the Free State Legislature.
