Chief Whip to the DA in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature
Last week, the KwaZulu-Natal legislature took parliament to the people of Dundee and its surrounding communities.
Despite the massive financial outlay in doing so, not a single member of the provincial cabinet bothered to attend day one of the proceedings. On day two, only three MEC’s showed up.
The fact that members of the executive made so little effort to be there is a slap in the face to the Legislature and an insult to the Speaker of the House.
Parliament to the people is an ANC-driven initiative which costs the taxpayer in excess of R2 million per day.
The DA has repeatedly expressed concern over the financial implications of this jaunt and has called for smaller, less expensive field trips in order to engage with the people.
The virtual non-attendance by the provincial executive is yet another good reason why this practice should be stopped.
