Premier fails to acknowledge importance of oversight

James Masango MPL

Provincial Chief Whip of the Official Opposition

Note: The following member’s statement was delivered by James Masango to the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature this afternoon.

The premier’s refusal to submit himself and his administration to oversight, by not facing the house and responding to questions for oral reply is extremely concerning.

This past year the honourable premier only answered oral questions on two occasions, leaving many critical issues unanswered and unexplained, despite Legislature Rules and Orders stating that they should be answered within 21 days of submission, or at the next sitting.

This is in contrast to the Western Cape, where members are obliged to attend every sitting, where questions for oral reply sessions are held every month, may be directed at both premier Helen Zille and members of her cabinet – as well as unprepared questions allowed every second month.

The cornerstone of democracy is transparency and accountability, and it is not surprising that the best performing provincial government in South Africa is also the most transparent and accountable.

The honourable premier and the Mpumalanga provincial government have a very long way to go.
