The DA welcomes the arrest of six teachers who allegedly stole food designated for their school’s feeding scheme.
According to reports, the teachers from Gugulabasha Primary School in Sakhile near Standerton were arrested after groceries belonging to the non-fee school’s feeding scheme were found in their cars.
The DA applauds the police’s efforts in this regard as allegations of theft of food at non-fee schools are not new to the DA. On numerous occasions we’ve been contacted by concerned parents and teachers who claim that the nutritional requirements of learners at certain non-fee schools in the province are not being met, mostly due to insufficient food which is a result of theft by school staff.
In welcoming the arrests, we call on the department of education to suspend the officials pending the outcome of the criminal case and to also launch an internal investigation into the matter. We also urge MEC Reginah Mhaule to investigate all such allegations at other non-fee schools to ensure that learners across the province are being properly catered for.
We further call on the police to leave no stone unturned in their investigation against the six teachers who if found guilty should be punished accordingly.
