Electricity supply suspended: Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality

Peter Frewen MPL

Free State Provincial Legislature

Rural Maintenance has suspended electricity supply to all the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality’s administrative offices for failure by the municipality to pay its R14,170 million electricity bill overdue since 01 September 2013.

Rural Maintenance will continue to supply electricity to residents of the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality, and electricity supply to critical infrastructure such as clinics and water pumps will continue uninterrupted.

Last year ESKOM served notice to suspend electricity supply to Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality for failure to make payment to its ESKOM bill in excess of R205 million.

Rural Maintenance has continued to pay the ESKOM bulk account timeously, to a total of R92,389 million.

The failure of the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality to pay for its own electricity consumption is inexplicable. The municipality receives funds from National Government through the allocation of Equitable Share to meet its obligations and for the supply of Free Basic Electricity to disadvantaged communities. The acting Municipal Manager, Mr Taetsane, must immediately facilitate payment to Rural Maintenance.

The DA in Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality have for years called for action in council to improve the municipality ability to deliver services and get its books in order. Both the Chief Financial Officer and the Municipal Manager positions are currently filled in acting capacities. Both incumbents do not possess the required and relevant qualifications necessary to execute their duties and manage the municipality effectively.

The DA will apply pressure in council to permanently appoint a qualified CFO and Municipal Manager at the next available opportunity.
