A  six year old grade R leaner in Mahlodumela Primary School in Chebeng, Kereke Echou, near Seshego, died yesterday when he fell into a pit latrine during school hours.

The small boy left class to use the school’s bathroom. When he did not return to class after several hours, the teachers began searching for the boy.

After conducting a search of the school, teachers discovered that the boy had fallen into the pit latrine and died.

This is the shocking reality faced by our most vulnerable learners during school time. I am heartbroken by this terrible incident.

We grieve with the family in this difficult time. We will keep them in our thoughts and prayers and will make sure that everything is done to get to the bottom of this terrible incident.

There are serious questions about the role and responsibility of the teachers at this school, as well as the infrastructure at this school.

All of these matters must be investigated with a full inquiry. The DA will make sure that the education department and other stakeholders gets to the bottom of what happened here.

We must make sure that this never happens again.
