DA KZN: Premier must suspend Dhlomo

Leader of the DA in the KZN Legislature

The Democratic Alliance calls on KZN Premier, Senzo Mchunu, to immediately suspend provincial Health MEC, Sibongiseni Dhlomo pending the outcome of a formal enquiry.

This after the MEC suspended a senior departmental official – originally head-hunted for his performance as a Chief Financial Officer – allegedly for reversing a tender award which did not ‘respect the ANC’.

According to a media report, the official removed a multi-million rand hospital waste management tender from a black-owned company and awarded it to another company with four white directors.

In an sms to the official, Dhlomo states that he will report the matter to the ANC on the basis that the decision was made ‘without political directive’.  He adds that he is “shocked that this can happen with the ANC in power’.

The DA is appalled by the MEC’s comments which reveal an alarming lack of integrity.  Clearly, he is putting politics before value for money.

The comments made reveal, yet again, the ANC-led government’s failure to distinguish between state-related matters and the affairs of the party.

They are also further evidence of the corruption that exists at the highest levels within the ANC-led provincial government – where multi-million rand contracts continue to be awarded, based on political party patronage rather than on merit.

It is this very behaviour that is ruining our province.

The DA will today write to Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, with the request that she urgently investigate Dhlomo’s conduct.

In the interim, we expect the Premier to suspend Dhlomo pending the outcome of both the Public Protector’s investigation and an internal disciplinary enquiry.
