Health Department to pay doctor’s negligence with public coffers

Desiree van der Walt

DA Limpopo Spokesperson on Health

The Health department might utilised taxpayer’s money to pay an estimated R2.8 million to a woman who was misdiagnosed with breast cancer.

It was reported that Ms Estelle Kunneke won R2.8 million damages case against the Limpopo Department of Health in the High Court in Pretoria recently.

It’s clear that the department will be misusing the public coffers to pay the blunder of a doctor. The lawsuit could have been avoided if the doctors and nurses could have been more vigilant when treating patients.

The DA is objecting the use of tax payer’s money to cover their blunders instead of improving the health conditions in various hospitals and clinics across the province.

We also appeal to the Health MEC, Dipuo Letsatsi Duba to institute disciplinary action against the doctor responsible for this and possibly ensure  that he or she is financially liable for their negligence.

The DA also  urges the MEC, to immediately finalise all the pending issues with the Health Provincial Council of South Africa to avoid further fruitless expenditure.
