KZN Health MEC must ‘name and shame’ medical waste culprits

Makhosazana Mdlalose, MPP

DA KZN Spokesperson on Health

The DA in KwaZulu-Natal expects Health MEC, Sibongiseni Dhlomo to ensure that the origin of medical waste illegally dumped at the Wildland’s Conservation Trust (WCT) recycling bins in Hilton is traced and the culprit prosecuted.

This, after staff found syringes, needles and ampoules thrown away with normal waste on Thursday last week.

The DA expects the MEC to prioritise this matter and to ensure that the perpetrators’ names are made public.  Finding the culprits should not be difficult.  Close examination of the articles should indicate the source.

The dumping of such waste is entirely unacceptable.  The department has a medical waste disposal policy which must be enforced so that citizens of this province are not subjected to the dangers that illegal dumping of this nature poses.

The DA will submit parliamentary questions to the MEC in which we will request feedback regarding the origin of the waste found in Hilton.

Those medical institutions found to have flouted the rules must face the consequences.
