MEC must intervene if eThekwini is to be saved

Yesterday, during a sitting of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, the DA tabled a motion calling on provincial COGTA MEC, Nomusa Dube-Ncube to urgently intervene within eThekwini municipality in a bid to halt the rapid decline of service delivery levels.

The move comes after it was announced earlier this week that the ANC-run municipality had failed to obtain a clean audit for the sixth year running.

Ethekwini is in a disastrous state.  Unauthorised and irregular expenditure at R325 million continues unabated as Supply Chain Management (SCM) policies are blatantly flouted with contempt and apparent impunity.

The municipality has under spent on its Capital Budget by a massive R792 million and has also failed to spend R597 million of its Conditional Grants.

This is a disgrace given the millions of people who rely on this municipality for the most basic of services.

In fact, it should be regarded as a criminal offence.

In one decade, the ANC has managed to ruin one of the best run and managed municipalities in the country.

The MEC can no longer stand by and observe – she must act.
