Middelburg baby deaths: DA calls for top level investigation

James Masango MPL

Provincial Chief Whip of the Official Opposition

The DA is devastated by the death of two babies at the Middelburg Provincial Hospital, and calls on health MEC Candith Mashego-Dlamini to immediately launch a high-level investigation into the causes of this unfortunate event.

According to reports, the babies died in early January, allegedly because they were incorrectly given an overdose of potassium chloride by a nurse. The autopsy results have not yet been announced.

This hospital, which is increasingly becoming the worst in Mpumalanga, is in the throes of a severe management and medical crisis, and cannot be referred to as an institute of health care.

MEC Mashego-Dlamini must, without delay, launch a top level investigation into the deaths of the two babies, and ascertain whether the allegations of an overdose are true, whether it was a result of negligence, or whether a doctor made an incorrect diagnosis and treatment.

The DA calls on the MEC and the health department to immediately suspend all medical personnel involved in this tragedy, pending the outcome of the investigation – and if necessary, criminally charge any person or persons found to have been negligent.

The MEC owes it to the people of the greater Middelburg area to intervene and restore respectability to this hospital.
