The DA in Gauteng demands urgent intervention from the Gauteng Social Development Department to address the increase in the number of bodies of young children being found in Diepsloot.

Another decomposing baby’s body was found under a bridge in the informal settlement north of Johannesburg. The three year old girl is the fifth abused child to be found dead in Diepsloot in the past few months. Police are investigating the death.

The DA calls on Social Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza to intervene. The Department must investigate this increase in the number of abandoned babies. It must also determine why no police reports were filed on the missing child and why have no relatives have come forward to claim the toddler.

It is time for the Department to implement its own vision of “a caring and integrated social development system that facilitates human development and improves the quality of life for the people of Gauteng.”
