Premier Mathabatha must stop SANRAL

Jacques Smalle

DA Limpopo Provincial Leader

Limpopo Premier , Mr Stanley Mathabatha must urgently invalidate the  handing over of more than 1 600km of Limpopo provincial roads to SANRAL.

The pronouncement could lead to Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL) to becoming idle.

Since the former MEC , Pinky Kekana transferred the entity’s functions to the On-Point Engineering in 2010 , RAL has been dysfunctional.

Millions of taxpayers monies were channelled into On-Point Engineering whose directors and other beneficiaries are now facing criminal actions for allegedly fleecing the state improperly.

This is the result of years of neglect of these roads by the provincial department of roads and transport.

Instead of repairing the damage caused by Ms Kekana , all the dilapidated provincial roads will from April be handed over to SANRAL.

If SANRAL manages Limpopo roads , that could ultimately result in more tolling across the province.

The DA wants Premier Mathabatha to ensure that RAL original mandate is restored to deal with the backlog of roads across the province. The entity must also get its allocated budget to maintain all the provincial and districts roads.

The DA will be submitting a Private Members Bill to the legislature to fast-track restoration of the entity’s mandate.

We will also request an urgent meeting with Limpopo Premier ,Mr Stanley Mathabatha, to immediate intervene to ensure that this decision is reversed.
