DA grows while ANC continues to decline

Anthony Benadie MPL

Provincial Leader – Mpumalanga

Note: The following motion without notice was tabled by Anthony Benadie during the first sitting of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature during its Taking Legislature to the People programme in the Govan Mbeki Municipality.

Honourable Speaker, I rise to move a motion without notice,

Noting that:

On 19 February 2014 the Democratic Alliance won the by-election that took place in Ward 12 of the Thaba Chweu Muncipality. The DA grew from 74% to 87,6%  of the vote while the ANC declined from 19% to 12% in this diverse ward.

Also noting that the DA has won four of the five by-elections contested against the ANC in the past year. Even in Silobela in the Albert Luthuli municipality, the DA increased from 9,5% to 20% of the vote, while the ANC decreased from 86,8% to 75,4%.

Further noting that the ANC’s support has declined considerably in all of the five by-elections they contested.

Honourable Speaker, the results of these six by-elections that took place during the past year in Emalahleni, Mbombela, Albert Luthuli and Thaba Chweu respectively, is a clear indication that the people of Mpumalanga are increasingly pledging their support to the DA and are losing faith in the ANC.

The DA is South Africa’s most diverse party and increasingly the party of choice for South Africans who want to see change. While we continue to grow the ANC continues to get smaller.

I move that this house:

  • Congratulate newly elected ward councillor in Thaba Chweu, Nicko Janse van Vuuren and wish him the best in serving the community of Thaba Chweu;
  • Welcome the increased display of democracy in these instances where voters are using their constitutional right to vote for a party of their choice.

I so move.
