Former KZN Premier must account for luxury flights

Sizwe Mchunu, MPP

Leader of the DA in the KZN Legislature

The KZN Office of the Premier has blocked parliamentary questions by the DA regarding former provincial Premier, Zweli Mkhize’s use of private jets to attend two weddings in 2011.

The DA’s questions focused on the nature of the relationship between the Premier and each bridal couple and why it was necessary to attend the weddings in his professional capacity – this in a bid to justify the R80 000 charter costs.

In the reply, dated 21 February 2014, Premier, Senzo Mchunu states that as current Premier he “does not possess the information on the nature of relationship between the former Premier and the bridal couples in question and therefore is not in a position to respond”.

This is utter nonsense. It is a blatant attempt to cover up the true facts of this case.

We are now more convinced than ever that the expenditure on these flights was inappropriate.

Surely the Office of the Premier keeps such records and can confirm the reasons for Dr Mkhize’s attendance.

The questions come after a November 2013 reply to the DA revealed that in 2011 the former Premier spent almost R900 000 on private flights. In 2012 he flew seven times between January and March at a cost of R205 000.

The fact that Dr Mkhize is no longer KZN’s Premier is irrelevant.  These flights were paid for with KZN taxpayers’ money and he must be held responsible. He must repay the money and be formally investigated if any regulations were contravened.

Again, Zuma’s ANC is using every trick in the book to hide as much as possible so that the true extent of their corruption is not revealed.
