Joburg hospital cleaners on strike

Toilets are stinking at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital as cleaners have gone on strike today after several days of go slow action.

They accuse management of favouritism in appointments, particularly at the mortuary.

Problems at the mortuary have not been resolved since it was revealed in November last year that unclaimed bodies lie there for months before being given pauper burials.

Conditions are deteriorating at the hospital because of the strike, which needs to be resolved as soon as possible.

The Gauteng Health Department needs to step in as the cleaners appear to have legitimate grievances not addressed by hospital management.
