DA KZN: Crisis at Addington as second radiotherapy machine breaks down

Dr Imran Keeka, MPL

DA KZN Spokesperson on Health

The Democratic Alliance has learned that the second of two radiotherapy machines at Addington Hospital has broken down.

Earlier this week, news reports confirmed that one of Addington’s machines, along with several others at major Durban hospitals, were ‘out of order’ after the KZN Health department allegedly continued to renege on a maintenance agreement.  This, despite an earlier commitment by the DOH that it would pay for the ongoing upkeep of the machines on a month to month basis.

When both of Addington’s machines were optimally functioning, there was a two week waiting period for patients.  Without them, the waiting period is eight months. It is abundantly clear that this would cause significant distress to patients.

The current situation at Addington, and other major Durban hospitals which serve patients across the province, is scandalous.

I have today written to KZN Health MEC, Sibongiseni Dhlomo,to look into the matter with the utmost urgency.  The responsibility for this collapse in health care stops at his door.  He must now show that he has the political will to sort out this mess.
