Dr Rishigen Viranna, MPL
As the Democratic Alliance Spokesperson on Community Safety and Social Development in KwaZulu-Natal I am outraged by the recent allegations of police brutality in Phoenix police station.
According to media reports, a 41 year old man was allegedly assaulted in police station’s holding cells and later died as a result.
The DA notes these claims with great concern. We welcome the fact that the matter has been referred to the IPID for investigation. A further concern is that the accused police officers are still on duty at SAPS Phoenix and working within the community.
I will write to KZN’s SAPS Commissioner to request that this matter be thoroughly investigated so that the family of the deceased can get some form of closure.
I will further request that the accused police officers are suspended until the conclusion of the investigation and that they face the full might of the law should they be found guilty of this shocking deed.
