Sizwe Mchunu, MPL
Leader of the DA in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature
The Democratic Alliance in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature is concerned by the appointment of yet another ANC member to the position of SCOPA chair.
The appointment marks the second term where an opposition party member has not chaired this important portfolio.
It is inexcusable that the chairperson of parliament’s watchdog body is both a player and the referee.
The appointment also flies in the face of recommendations by auditor-generals internationally, who claim that it is best practice for an opposition member to chair important oversight committees.
This decision effectively absolves the provincial government from being held accountable to the people of KwaZulu-Natal.
