DA wants copies of authorisation to drain Josini wetland

Ann McDonnell, MPL

DA KZN Spokesperson on Conservation

The DA will demand copies of authorisation for the drainage of an important wetland area near Josini by the KZN Conservation department and Ezemvelo.

This after media reports which confirm that the multi- million rand project has been halted in its tracks by the Green Scorpions.

According to the department, the work is being done to remove alien plant material.  It has since been given notice to supply any authorisation received.

The DA is deeply concerned by allegations that the department and Ezemvelo have upset what is an ecologically sensitive region. Those charged with a duty of caring for the environment should never appear to be abusers.

I will submit the following questions to KZN Conservation MEC, Mike Mabuyakhulu;

–          Why was the draconian measure of draining 25 ha of important wetland considered under the guise of alien plant removal?

–          Was an EIA conducted prior to digging the first canal?

Until such time as we have proof that the department complied with all the necessary rules and regulations, we will continue to believe otherwise.
