DA welcomes call to action for Child Protection

Spokesperson on Social Development

As we commemorate National Child Protection week, we hope that all areas of our society mobilise to ensure the safety and well-being of our children. Children are an important part of our society and a safe and secure environment is important to raising our children.

The Democratic Alliance was appalled to learn about alleged sexual harassment experienced by grade 10-12 learners at the Jordao College in Towerby South of Johannesburg. The allegation follows complaints by parents of sexual harassment when the school principal instructed school teachers to inspect the female students’ underwear. This is a serious invasion of privacy in light of the South African Constitution.

The DA commends the Gauteng Education MEC Lesufi Panyaza for taking the necessary steps to ensure that the best interest of these children is considered and call on all members of our society to play a role in ensuring the privacy of our children is respected.

Every child has a right to privacy and a child’s best interest is of paramount importance in every instance.
