The DA welcomes the announcement by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) that it would investigate allegations of police using live ammunition against protestors in Barberton last week.
According to reports, IPID will investigate charges of discharging a firearm in public, and it may be escalated to attempted murder following the incident, where one protester was seriously wounded and hospitalised.
While we welcome the fact that that investigators are searching for cartridges and projectiles on the scene, we are concerned over the time lapse since the incident, and the very real possibility of the scene being compromised.
To this end, the DA calls on every member of the public who may have information that could assist with this investigation, to come forward, so that the perpetrators can be brought to book.
It is the duty of police to protect and uphold the rights of the country’s citizens, and any intolerance must be nipped in the bud.
