DA welcomes Middelburg drug bust

Jane Sithole MPL

Deputy Provincial Leader – Mpumalanga

The DA welcomes the arrest of two suspected drug couriers by the Hawks at the Middelburg toll plaza.

According to reports, the suspects were en route from Mozambique to Johannesburg and carried ephedrine to the value over R250 000 in the boot of their car. The Hawks acted on a tip-off and made the arrest.

Drug smugglers have been plying their trade between our neighbouring countries and Gauteng for many years, using Mpumalanga roads and hiding in our towns in their attempts to dodge the police.

It is widely known that drug abuse has destroyed the fabric of society in our large towns along the N4, with drug deals taking place in the open in Nelspruit, Middelburg and Witbank.

The DA hopes that this arrest will lead to many others, sending a clear message to drug dealing syndicates – Mpumalanga is too risky a throughway to use for their illegal activities, and that smugglers will use our roads at their own peril.
