Effective action needed to fix Joburg Hospital

Jack Bloom MPL

DA Gauteng Shadow Health MEC

I welcome the visit by Infrastructure Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza this past week to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital, but this must be followed by effective action to fix the many equipment and building defects.

For instance, there is a long history of failed promises to fix the lifts. Some old broken lifts have still not been replaced, and four of the new lifts are currently broken.

Long-standing problems include leaking pipes and broken air-conditioners.

Two of the seven steam autoclaves are not working, which causes delays in sterilising surgical instruments.

Mayathula-Khoza somehow missed the sewage leak on the fourth floor in Block Two, which can be smelt even on the ninth floor.

I hope that Mayathula-Khoza brings fresh energy to reverse the appalling neglect suffered by what should be a flagship hospital.
