Government must prevent another JTG school crisis

The DA is calling on Northern Cape Premier, Sylvia Lucas, to do everything in her power to prevent a repeat of the 2012 schools crisis in the John Taole Gaetsewe District, which saw schools in the region closed for several months.

This comes after reports of school closures in the Kuruman area this week, due to service delivery protests.

It already feels like a case of déjà vu and it is deeply concerning to the DA.

In 2012, the provincial administration failed to address a similar service delivery issue with the urgency it deserved. As a result, it spiraled out of control, resulting in the education of thousands of learners being compromised.

Regardless of the challenges now faced, the Premier and her executive simply cannot afford to delay the resolution of this potential crisis. This will be a true test of their ability to run this province.

At the same time, the DA understands that people are disgruntled with government services but holding their own children’s education ransom is unacceptable and will only create a far worse situation.

The Premier must prevent another school crisis urgently.
