KZN fires: Proper help must be available when needed

Francois Rodgers, MPL

DA KZN Spokesperson on Agriculture

The Democratic Alliance is shocked and saddened by the devastating fires that have swept through large parts of Southern KZN leaving a trail of destruction of property, livestock, grazing and loss of human life.

Our deepest condolences go out to those families that have lost loved ones in this terrible tragedy.

It is essential that KZN’s Agriculture department rolls out an urgent rescue plan to assist farmers in the region, in particular with the provision of feed for livestock given that many of the farms affected by the blaze have lost all forms of grazing.

While the response from the KZN COGTA department is encouraging to note – with the dispatch of disaster relief to some of the affected communities – the DA remains concerned by allegations that this is a knee-jerk reaction after the initial response by the district fire department and disaster management was lacking.  This, amid further claims that had these services been more proactive, damage could have been limited.

The DA will further investigate these claims.  Proper help must be available when it is needed.
