Bring back KZN’s specialised Drug Intervention Units

Rishigen Viranna, MPL

DA KZN Spokesperson on Community Safety and Liaison

The Department of Community Safety must re-instate the province’s specialised Drug Intervention Units as a matter of urgency.

The South African Police Service under this department have embarrassed themselves and this province by bungling what they claimed was a R3 billion heroin bust in Kloof two weeks ago.

Experts who tested the seized drugs have now said that police actually seized mandrax valued at R20 million. This is ridiculous and shows that SAPS is short of the expertise needed to fully fight the drug scourge that has engulfed this province.

I will be raising this matter at the next sitting of the Community Safety portfolio as it has become even more evident that this province will never win the war against drugs unless the Drug Intervention Units are re-instated.

This whole mess also raises some serious questions about the state of Intelligence monitoring under the SAPS and I will be submitting a series of parliamentary questions in the next sitting of the legislature to ascertain as to how to this misguided episode happened to begin with.
