The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal joins shack dwellers’ movement, Abahlali base Mjondolo in welcoming the announcement by Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu that an accurate and transparent allocation list is to be created to deal with the country’s massive housing backlog.

The move is aimed at identifying those who still require free housing after 20 years of democracy and eliminating fraud, corruption and housing queue jumping.

This announcement has been a long time coming.  The DA in KZN has actively called for such a move for years.  That the Minister has finally committed to such an initiative is a step in the right direction and we look forward to engaging with the provincial Human Settlement department on this issue.

Previous housing lists have been the source of much consternation, particularly around election time when the allocation of homes has been used as a pawn by politicians and officials.  The hopes of thousands have been dashed as they simply move further and further down the list if they don’t vote for the so-called right party.

The DA sincerely hopes that the creation of a proper database in KZN will finally bring this to an end.
