The Democratic Alliance welcomes Voortrekker High School’s thorough investigation into incidents of bullying and the subsequent action taken against the perpetrators.
It is gratifying to note that the school has put new measures in place to ensure that no other learner who calls the hostel a ‘home away from home’ will ever be subjected to bullying and intimidation again.
While we are pleased that justice has occurred – and sincerely hope that the boys involved will have learned their lesson – we remain concerned by the ongoing issue of bullying within our schools.
We believe this matter warrants a complete policy re-think by the KZN Education department so that there are standardised guidelines for all schools in the province when it comes to bullying.
The DA is committed to being a part of this process and will raise it with KZN Education MEC, Peggy Nkonyeni as a matter of urgency during the first meeting of the provincial portfolio committee.
